Traffic Offenses/Speeding Tickets
Traffic violations and speeding tickets can really come back to haunt you if you don't take care of them right away. Sometimes just paying the ticket while convenient at the time and perhaps cheaper at the time, will often end up coming back in the form of higher insurance rates and a potentially suspended license.
According to Georgia law, your Georgia driver’s license will be suspended for a period of one year if you receive 15 points within a 24 month period. You are assessed points on your driver’s license for all types of traffic violations, for example:
| Aggressive driving | 6 points |
| Reckless driving | 4 points |
| Unlawful passing of a school bus | 6 points |
| Speeding more than 34 miles per hour the over limit | 6 points |
| Speeding more than 24 miles per hour over the limit | 4 points |
| Speeding more than 19 miles per hour over the limit | 3 points |
| Speeding more than 14 miles per hour over the limit | 2 points |
| Disobedience of a traffic control device | 3 points |
| (Running red light or stop sign) | |
| Possession of an open container of alcohol while driving | 2 points |
| Texting while driving | 1 point |
If you do suffer a driver’s license suspension due to points, you will have to pay a costly reinstatement fee to the State and attend a defensive driving course to be eligible to have your driving privileges returned to you.
